Tried and True SEO Techniques

The process of SEO is possible one of the most often misunderstood and troublesome techniques on the Internet and in no arena is it more important than in the area of niche marketing – especially when it comes to small and medium-sized businesses.  The harsh truth of the matter is that regardless of how cutting edge your ecommerce web design may be, without proper and consistent use of search engine optimization (SEO) techniques you are just doing the doggie paddle in a wading pool.  By practicing and employing a few simple ideas though, you’ll be the Michael Phelps of SEO in no time flat.

1.  Commit to the process
The first thing to remember is that nothing good- NOTHING – on the Internet happens overnight.  Search engine optimization is a process and as such it requires a commitment to what you are doing and the same dedication that led you to begin your business in the first place.  SEO is just as important, if not more so, than many of the other aspects that often take priority.  Because SEO is still a fairly new animal in the industry, the technical aspects change on a regular basis.  That means that the specific processes and techniques that are necessary for SEO success will need to change in order to keep up with progress.

2.  Patience is a virtue
Again I need to emphasize that SEO is not a one-step procedure.  It is crucial that you are patient and don’t allow small setbacks and slow growth to affect your drive and determination, otherwise you will be reaching for the water wings again when you should be doing the 100 meter butterfly.

3.  Know your keywords
It is common for people to immediately think of the one or two word keywords and want to be on page one of the search engine results for those.  What you need to realize is there is a wide variety of keywords and while you may not be able to compete in the short run with the big boys when it comes to those short keywords, there is a lot of traffic to be had by focusing on long tail keywords as well and in many cases you can be ranked even higher than your bigger competition for some of these.  All it takes is a little keyword research!
