SEO Can Be Boring – Learn How to Make it Fun Like Volkswagen

Doing traditional SEO is kind of like completing a dull word search puzzle. You comb through the content on your site, making sure that those critical keywords are there in the right number and in the right places so your site will rank high in the SERPs. This traditional keyword strategy is important, sure, but it’s also pretty boring for you. It probably isn’t doing much for your site visitors, either.  Wouldn’t it be cooler, and more fun, to do something creative with your SEO – something that would get your visitors talking, or even better, linking to your site? There are ways to make SEO more fun – and more effective. A touch of humor and a dash of nerve will help you charge up your SEO results.

Take the recent article about Volkswagen on Business Insider. Guus ter Beek, working with Volkswagen, optimized five different URLs to respond to the search term “ultimate business car” on Google Images by displaying sequential images across the top of the results page — essentially forming a five-piece banner ad for the VW Passat Variant. It was a startling advertising coup and got the company some intense buzz, not least because it broke none of Google’s rules.

But you don’t have to be an SEO wunderkind to make your SEO strategies more fun. There are many less technically challenging ways to inspire others to visit your site, link to your blog or to share your content. The key is to find ways to get visitors engaged with your company, your products and your message. Here are a few suggestions to make your SEO more fun:

Start a Blog

  • If you don’t already have one, start a blog – it helps your SEO in a lot of ways. First, having a blog helps position you as an expert in your field, especially if your posts get quoted by the media or shared on other relevant blogs. It also doesn’t hurt to inject some (appropriate) humor into your posts now and then. It humanizes your business and makes your posts more likely to be shared.

Create a Viral Video

  • Create a funny video and post it on all your sites (with share and link buttons handy) and also on You Tube. This video should use humor to teach your target customers how to solve a common problem or reach an important goal.

Try Out Contests

  • The best kinds are the ones that engage your customers and challenge them to think creatively. For example, if you run a bakery, challenge your customers with a “Best Wedding Cake” recipe contest. Announce your contest to the many sweeps sites online, and send press releases to encourage media links.

Giveaways

  • Some business sites incorporate games, freeware or interactive media to draw visitors and encourage inbound links. If your target customers are mothers of young children, for example, a free edutainment game makes a nice inducement to visit your site.

Try to think outside the box, and don’t be afraid to use a touch of humor when it’s appropriate. SEO really can be fun when you dream up fresh and creative ways to draw your customers to your site.
