New Year’s Eve 2009: Reflections of a Blue Moon
by Dennis Consorte - December 31st, 2009 1:45 pm
It’s been a snowy morning here in NYC and in just a few hours, we will celebrate a new year filled with hope for a promising future. Time’s Square will be packed with tourists and locals alike, counting down the minutes in the slushy streets typically bumper to bumper with taxi cabs and impatient drivers. Illuminated by the light of a blue moon, we can take time out to reflect on the past as we plan for a successful 2010 personally, professionally and as a society.
2009 Year In Review
2009 was a year of contrast – ups and downs, hopes and challenges, accomplishments and defeats. It is this balance that makes the world interesting, and it is the ability to see through the darkness to the pinpoints in the sky that glimmer with new possibilities.
Despite the controversy surrounding Michael Jackson’s personal life, millions of his fans across the world felt hopeless when The King of Pop died. Yet out of the darkness a new star was born as the unknown singer Susan Boyle achieved instant fame through the viral web. The internet also played a major role when the United States swore in its first Black President Barack Obama with a dream for change ringing in the ears of young voters. Yet, our most important method for communicating in the millennium is threatened by opposition to net neutrality.
The threat of Swine Flu hit closer to home for most citizens of the world as the H1N1 virus caught us by surprise. For better or worse, this global pandemic was contrasted by Executive Order 13505, Removing Barriers to Responsible Scientific Research Involving Human Stem Cells in the quest for new cures and treatments.
Meanwhile, a $787 billion stimulus package was used as a long-term plan to treat an ailing economy. Unemployment reached a record high of 10% nationwide, yet there is hope as the recession that began in 2007 is finally over. We, our friends and family have all felt the effects of this rough economy, yet we should consider ourselves thankful. Many were not so lucky when a powerful tsunami ravaged the shores of American Samoa, the Philippines and Indonesia, and throughout the Pacific. Yet even in the shadow of such a catastrophe, events like the Miracle on the Hudson shine through with hope for a new tomorrow.
As I reflect on 2009, I am confident that 2010 will be a happy, healthy and prosperous year, especially for e-commerce. Even though times are still tough, holiday shopping online was 5% higher this year as compared to 2008. The moon is blue, but that does not need to be the color of our emotions. At ECommerce Partners, we have seen this growth firsthand among many of our clients. In times like these, adaptation is key. In the online space, wiser spending, more strategic marketing and finding new opportunities will drive e-tail sales into a strong upward swing by next holiday season.
It’s New Year’s Eve! Take some time out to reflect on your accomplishments, goals and resolutions for the decade ahead. Enjoy the holiday, clear your head and when it’s over, start your year-long plan for the future. Now is the time to start planning for the year ahead. Create a well-thought marketing plan and see it through to fruition. On behalf of ECommerce Partners, I wish you and your families a healthy, safe and Happy New Year!
